No. This is a completely original movie conceived of by writer-director James Cameron, about a decade before the cartoon series on Nickelodeon started airing. Because James Cameron's concept and screenplay was already registered and copyrighted, he still reserves the right to use the word "avatar" as the title of his movie, in spite of the cartoon series being more widely known.

A separate movie adaption for the cartoon is in discussion and is set to be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. To avoid confusion, this movie is now named 'The Last Airbender.'

Note: The Nickelodeon's series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' is not an anime series. The term 'anime' is strictly applied to 'cartoons' made in Japan only. Hence, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a 'cartoon' (made in U.S.).

20th Century Fox has brought online the official website for James Cameron's Avatar where you'll get a glimpse of what looks like a female Na'vi (here's the male one) and you can listen to some of the score from the film. The site has a quick blurb about "Avatar Day," a list of international release dates and many ways to follow updates on the film, opening in North America on December 18.

Avatar Trailer Online Thursday

Apple has starting promoting that it will debut the first trailer for James Cameron's Avatar on Thursday. It was previously announced that the trailer would be released on "Avatar Day," next Friday, but the site's countdown clock is counting down to Thursday, August 20th at 7am.

The film hits theaters on December 18.
